NGO caters meals for school kids

Nearly 2,500 children of Government schools in Kamrup district will now be able to consume warm food as part of their mid-day meals everyday.

The Akshaya Patra Foundation, an NGO engaged in providing mid-day meals to government schools in Kamrup district, today added two more food distribution vehicles, a move which will see them reach an additional 2,500 school-going children everyday.

The vehicles, launched in the city, are custom-built with stainless steel racks and vessels to keep cooked food warm up to five to six hours and can cover a distance of 50 kms from the kitchen area.

The Foundation, which claimed that there are many children in Assam who go without a square meal a day, said it would need 10 more vehicles.

The NGO provides mid-day meals to 40,000 students across 400 Government schools in Kamrup district.

Overall, the NGO reaches out to 1,281,664 children covering 8,208 schools spanning 18 locations across eight states including Karnataka, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Assam, providing them with freshly cooked meal on school days.
